What is a POS with an integrated scale

A POS with an integrated scale is a point of sale that talks to a scale to charge products sold by weight. Instead of reading the weight, reaching for a calculator and typing the amount, the system does the whole calculation: you pick up the item, the scale weighs it, and the POS multiplies that weight by the per-kilo rate. The errors of selling by weight by hand

Mental maths. 1.340 kg at £2.95/kg isn't a sum you want to do in your head with a queue waiting. One decimal off and you lose margin or overcharge a customer.

How it works: EAN-13 weight barcode and PLU

There are two ways to work by weight, and a good POS supports both.

Scale connected to the POS. The assistant places the item on the plate, picks the per-kilo product (say "Vine tomato") and the weight flows straight to the receipt. Ideal for a served counter.

Labelling scale. You weigh the item at the counter, the scale prints a label with the weight, the price and a barcode, and the customer goes to the till where all you do is scan.

That barcode is the key. Scales generate an EAN-13 weight barcode that starts with a reserved prefix (usually 2) and includes the product's internal code — the PLU — and the weight or the already-calculated price. When the POS scanner reads that label, the sale is recorded with the exact amount from the scale. Nothing to type.

The PLU (Price Look-Up) is simply the short number that identifies each per-kilo product in the system. You set up "Hake" with its per-kilo price once, and from then on the scale and the POS speak the same language.

Tip: set up the tare properly from the start. Tare subtracts the weight of the container or tray so the customer only pays for the product. Without a correct tare, you overcharge and invite complaints.
